The student will learn the basics of both methods of ceramic production to create both functional and decorative pieces. The class will experiment with different decorating styles using patterns, embellishments, and underglaze colors and slips to enhance the work. There will be a deeper tutorial in glazing techniques to enhance patterns and textures. Benefits of this course include a continuous learning experience guided by a single instructor, an additional glazing session mid-term enabling the greater development of glazing skills, time to explore personal ideas, a well rounded ceramics education, an opportunity to have a few pieces fired in gas kiln, and more! All tools and materials included. Glazing Session - Wed Apr 30 @ 10am-12pm Session d'emaillage English / Anglais Wednesday/Mercredi 10:00 AM 12:00 PM 4/30/2025 40 Register – Inscrire An opportunity for experienced active students who have taken at least one full session including glazing at Gloucester Pottery School to come and glaze the bisqueware they could not complete during class. There is no instructor for this session. Additional glaze firing fees per pot will be tabulated and payment taken at the end of the session. Limit of 6 clients at a time during each 2 hour block. Please note our glazes are specifically formulated to be used with our own clay bodies in our own kilns. Wheel Level 2 Thurs 6:30pm Tour niveau 2 pour adultes jeu 18h30 Laraine Pederson English / Anglais Thursday/Jeudi 6:30 PM 9:00 PM 3/13/2025 4/17/2025 344 Register – Inscrire In this six week course there is no set curriculum, but rather the experienced student will come with their goals set and the instructor will formulate a project and demonstration plan to help the students achieve these goals - always with a focus on higher quality work. Gas kiln firing will be optional for those students who are interested. This course is for students who have completed two to three courses on the wheel and who can consistently throw a cylinder, evenly, as high as it is wide. 10kg of clay included, with more available for purchase. Prerequisite Level 1.5. Ages 16 to Adult. In this week?s workshop, students will explore their creativity through handbuilt mugs! Once the form is created, the student will be instructed on how to decorate it using various techniques which may include wax inlay, sgraffito, slip trailing, or carving.Price includes 2.5 hours of instruction, all materials, tools, and the glazing and firing by our technicians. Projects will be ready for pick up in approximately 3 weeks (participants will be notified via email). This workshop is open to clients 16 years and older.Une occasion d'essayer quelque chose de nouveau avec cet atelier de façonnage à la main d'une seule soirée. Parent and Me Handbuilding Sun 12:30pm Façonnage - parent et moi dim 12h30 Victoria Rodgers Bilingual / Bilingue Sunday/Dimanche 12:30 PM 2:00 PM 3/16/2025 4/27/2025 179 Register – Inscrire A wonderful way to share some special time in this activity with your child or grandchild. Each participant will register separately to create an individual clay project while learning about handbuilding pottery techniques such as: pinch pots, slab or coil building, and slump molds. Cost is per person - adults and children each make their own projects - and includes materials. Please note that each adult cannot register more than two children - the parent/guardian role is to have fun making their own project while also assisting their child with the steps as instructed by your teacher. For more than two children, an extra parent/guardian must register as well. Course is open for ages 6 years to adult Adulte et enfant aurant l'experience de poterie ensemble. Wheel Level 1 Mon 6:30pm Tour niveau 1 lun 18h30 Londe McClelland English / Anglais Monday/Lundi 6:30 PM 9:00 PM 3/17/2025 4/28/2025 344 Register – Inscrire This course is an introductory wheel course. Class duration 2.5 hours for 6 consecutive weeks. The student will cover the basic techniques for the beginner. You will first learn the art of centering the clay which will allow you make different pot shapes. Trimming a foot onto a pot and surface decoration is covered. Materials included. No prerequisite is required. Ages 16 to adultCe cours est une introduction en profondeur du cours sur le tour. La durée du cours est de 2,5 heures pendant 6 semaines consécutives. About Our History The Gloucester Pottery School was founded in 1991 by Rosemary Swan. We are an incorporated not-for-profit organization with a volunteer Board of Directors. We have grown from a very small entity operating out of a basement studio in the Cyrville Community Centre. Over the years we expanded into the whole of CCC’s basement. In June of 2009 we were able to expand still further when we moved to the new Shenkman Arts Centre. Our Facility The Gloucester Pottery School is the largest and best equipped ceramics studio in the region. Our school has 3 classrooms, 22 electric potters wheels, 4 electric kilns, a Bailey Gas Kiln, a pugmill, slab roller, and a wall extruder along with a great selection of hand tools. We take cleanliness very seriously, we have state-of-the-art air filtration system, all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned after each booking and the floors are professionally surfaced frequently. Our Programs We offer pottery courses for adults, teens, and children. In addition, we have Parent and Me for 6 – 10 year olds to participate with a parent or guardian. Gloucester Pottery School also offers Summer Camps for children and teens, professional pottery workshops by visiting artists and we give workshops for numerous groups including at present: Children’s Birthday Parties, youth organizations, Corporate Team Building, School classes and for Special Occasions as well as Special Needs groups. Private lessons are also available. We operate the Dust Evans Gallery which showcases six professional artists each year. The school’s mandate states that the school will provide pottery courses and provide a welcoming space and in a facility with equipment of the highest possible health and safety standards. This project has allowed the school to more fully fulfill it’s mandate than it has previously been able to. In the past ceramics education at GPS and other studios in the region has b een limited (by cost and physic al building spaces) to those that are able to enter the spaces and use the existing equipment/studio. With this project and by purchasing adjustable height tables, an adjustable height barrier free adaptive pottery wheel and by installing barrier free sinks Gloucester Pottery School has opened up ceramics education to a greater portion of the community. This project has also improved the ergonomics and health of safety for many more of the students. Project Completed December 2021. Handbuilding - Intro to Ceramics Tues 6:30pm Intro à la céramique pour adultes mar 18h30 Vanessa Villarreal English / Anglais Tuesday/Mardi 6:30 PM 9:00 PM 3/11/2025 4/15/2025 344 Register – Inscrire This 6 week class is the perfect introduction to ceramics; students will learn the basics of working with clay through handbuilding. The class will teach you about clay, studio safety, and a variety of handbuilding and surface decoration techniques establishing a strong foundation with the material. We recommend this class to anyone looking to get started making pottery, it is a great first class in your ceramic education. 10kg of clay included. No prerequisite. Cancellation Policies Cancellation Policy Make-up classes Gloucester Pottery School does not substitute or provide make-up classes. If you miss a class, your instructor will ensure your work is at an appropriate state that allows you to continue with the class structure the following week(s). Cancellation policy for class or workshop enrollment For all class refunds requested, an Administrative Fee of $25+HST will apply even if refund is credited to your account. No refunds are given unless the request is made 7 days before the 1st class is due to commence, unless it is due to a provincial or Ottawa Public Health mandated closure. Refunds will be processed within 21 days of the refund request. No refunds are given for specialized Professional Workshops, where an outside artist is brought in to present. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone any program or activity due to low enrollment or inclement weather. A full refund will be provided for cancelled classes and every attempt will be made to re-schedule postponed classes. Refunds for purchased goods: for clay or toolkits Refunds will be issued within 30 days of purchase. Unused item and proof of purchase receipt must be presented in order to receive a refund. Returned cheques An admin fee will be imposed for all returned cheques and could result in refusal of future participation. Covid 19 Class Policies In the event of a provincially or Ottawa Public Health mandated closure occurring prior to the start of the course, you will be given the choice of a full course credit on your account or a full refund for your class. If the closure occurs once the course is in progress, you will be given the choice of a pro-rated course credit or refund for the remainder of your classes. We will waive our administrative fee for courses cancelled due to a provincial or Ottawa Public Health mandated closure. If we have to cancel a single class of your course due to an Ottawa Public Health Covid closure of the Shenkman Arts Center, we will extend your course by 1 week to make up the class. If the make-up date at the end of the session does not fit the student’s schedule we will offer make up glazing sessions that they can sign up for. (*glazing class is the last class of each course).
