Your party host will greet you 5 minutes before the party start time and bring you into the school. Is there a separate room for cake and gifts? All activities are held within the same room. After the construction portion of the party, work tables will be cleaned to help transition the space for cake/gifts. Can I bring food to the event? Due to time limitations, it is recommended that cake be the only food served during post project construction time. Do not forget to bring any plates, utensils or any other tableware needed. Is there access to a refrigerator? No, the studio is not equipped with a refrigerator for client use. Can I book additional time for the party? The total duration of the party is 2 hours. No extra time is available. Can I bring my own decorations? Our school is an active studio, to help preserve our space we ask that no outside decorations are brought to the event. The uniqueness of a party at Gloucester Pottery School is the opportunity to have a party in a pottery classroom, it is not a “party room”. There are a few elements the school adds for parties to personalize the event. Can I bring balloons? Due to the nature of the studio we ask that no balloons are brought, there are many items that could be bumped and broken, individuals with latex allergies, etc. Can non-participants attend the event? Only participants and the host parents will be allowed in the classroom. Exceptions are made for those participants who require additional support to be present. Parents/guardians of participants are welcome to wait by the lower level art galleries for the duration of the event. When will the pieces be ready for pickup? It will take approximately 3 weeks for the projects to be completed. Once all of the pieces are ready for pickup, the birthday organizer will be contacted by email through our website with pickup instructions. All pieces are to be picked up by the organizer and it is their responsibility to distribute the finished pieces to each participant. Terms of Service - Adult Group Events Due to equipment and facility limitations, adult group events are limited to a maximum of 7 participants. • FAQ | Gloucester Pottery

FAQ Programs Registration Clay & Firing Hours & Location Do you offer private lessons? This programming is currently on hold due to high volume of full session classes, lack of instructors, and studio space availability. Please contact the studio office for specific requests. Do you have open studio time or a membership program? No, the Gloucester Pottery School operates solely as a school and the studio is not available for public use outside of class time. Do you offer make-up lessons for classes missed? Make-up lessons or substitute classes are not offered. However, if you have missed your last glazing class, arrangements can be made with the studio office to have you attend an alternate glazing class if available. If you cannot join another glazing class, we will happily glaze your pieces for you with your selected glazes. If you have missed a wheel throwing or trimming class, please contact the office so we can make arrangments for either extra pieces to be thrown or trimmed for you. Where can I find examples of kids projects to choose from for birthdays and workshops? On the Book a Party - Children's Handbuilding Party page of our website you will find a gallery of sample projects your child can choose from for a birthday party or workshop. When will my pottery be ready for pick up? Pottery will be ready approximately 3 weeks from: - The last day of class (for students enrolled in a full session) - The day of drop off (for clients who have brought in pots outside of class time) - The day of the birthday or workshop Please note that you will receive an email from our Studio Manager when the pieces are ready to be picked up. We recommend checking your junk/spam folder and calling the studio office if you have not heard from us after 3 weeks. What happens if I miss my glazing class? The instructor/technician can glaze the pieces for you. If you know in advance you will be missing the class, choose the colours ahead of time and we can get them glazed and fired with the rest of the class. Otherwise follow up studio manager regarding what you want to do. You can take your bisqueware home and bring them to a future glazing class in the next session you are registered in. You can sign up for a glazing session. Due to our packed schedules, glazing sessions have been scheduled Wednesday mornings (10am-12pm) at the end of each session. You can contact Studio manager to register. We recommend this for students who have experience glazing. First timers will struggle in a glazing session as we may not have an instructor available to teach them the basics.

  • Resources | Gloucester Pottery School

Tools our staff recommend Students have been asking for years for a list of tools. This is not an extensive list but it is a few of our favourites and we will work on adding more. Each image links to where you can buy it. Textured Rolling Pins GPS has several different rolling pins like these in our studio we order from Sharon Hoppe Designs Solid Falcon rolling pin Large solid wooden rolling pin Bamboo Brush These brushes are our favourite for applying slip, underglaze and glaze. Link is to PSH but most pottery stores will carry them in a variety of sizes Hake Brush These brushes are great for covering a large area in slip on glaze. Available at most pottery supply stores Mud Tools Small Shredder These handy little shredders are great for cleaning up rims, leveling out pots and so many other tasks. Blades are replaceable. Also available in a long flat version Mud tools Cutting Wire These are a staff favourite for cutting wires. They wire doesn't kink and these handles are much easier to use than the wood ones. Found at almost all pottery supply stores GR Pottery Forms We have a number of GR Pottery Forms in Room 1 for making plates and trays. Most pottery supply stores will carry them Mud Tools When we set up individual tool kits for classes we made sure to splurge a little and include these. Each colour is a different hardness and they come in a variety of shapes Banding Wheel These are the banding wheels you will find in Room 1. They are really similar to the Shimpo but a bit more affordable. Staff and students love them. MDO Plywood Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood is arguable to best material to work on. It is smooth so no texture when rolling slabs, easy to clean so no dust like canvas, porous so things don't stick too much and very durable. All of our handbuilding tables are topped with it. You can make ware boards, bats and more from it. This material is commonly used by sign painters. It can sometimes be a bit tricky to track down, Home Hardware building centers and other smaller specialized companies will carry it or can order it in. It's a bit pricey but it is worth it.

  • About | Gloucester Pottery School

About Our History The Gloucester Pottery School was founded in 1991 by Rosemary Swan. We are an incorporated not-for-profit organization with a volunteer Board of Directors. We have grown from a very small entity operating out of a basement studio in the Cyrville Community Centre. Over the years we expanded into the whole of CCC’s basement. In June of 2009 we were able to expand still further when we moved to the new Shenkman Arts Centre. Our Facility The Gloucester Pottery School is the largest and best equipped ceramics studio in the region. Our school has 3 classrooms, 22 electric potters wheels, 4 electric kilns, a Bailey Gas Kiln, a pugmill, slab roller, and a wall extruder along with a great selection of hand tools. We take cleanliness very seriously, we have state-of-the-art air filtration system, all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned after each booking and the floors are professionally surfaced frequently. Our Programs We offer pottery courses for adults, teens, and children. In addition, we have Parent and Me for 6 – 10 year olds to participate with a parent or guardian. Gloucester Pottery School also offers Summer Camps for children and teens, professional pottery workshops by visiting artists and we give workshops for numerous groups including at present: Children’s Birthday Parties, youth organizations, Corporate Team Building, School classes and for Special Occasions as well as Special Needs groups. Private lessons are also available. We operate the Dust Evans Gallery which showcases six professional artists each year. Rosemary Swan From the Founding Director: “It is well known that there are more than creative benefits to pottery making. The very act of focusing on a given project you are creating actually frees the mind from the cares of the world you may be carrying and in turn can act as a therapy. This focus also allows your creative process to come into play and then there is the added bonus of having this special piece that is truly your own work, be there for others to enjoy and as a reminder of what you can achieve.” Our Partners and Sponsors We gratefully acknowledge the support of: T hrough this grant the Gloucester Pottery School improved accessibility of the school removing several of the barriers to ceramic education in Ottawa. The school’s mandate states that the school will provide pottery courses and provide a welcoming space and in a facility with equipment of the highest possible health and safety standards. This project has allowed the school to more fully fulfill it’s mandate than it has previously been able to. In the past ceramics education at GPS and other studios in the region has b een limited (by cost and physic al building spaces) to those that are able to enter the spaces and use the existing equipment/studio. With this project and by purchasing adjustable height tables, an adjustable height barrier free adaptive pottery wheel and by installing barrier free sinks Gloucester Pottery School has opened up ceramics education to a greater portion of the community. This project has also improved the ergonomics and health of safety for many more of the students. Project Completed December 2021. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the City of Ottawa Cultural Facilities Fund for funding our project: Improvements to Gloucester Pottery School Accessibility Board of Directors Gloucester Pottery School is an incorporated not-for-profit organization with a volunteer Board of Directors.
