Job Opportunities!

Wheel Instructor

Gloucester Pottery School is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic pottery wheel instructor to teach our beginner evening classes in our Winter 2027 session (January and February).

You’ll introduce new students to the fundamentals of throwing on the wheel, from centering and pulling walls to trimming and glazing, in a supportive, welcoming studio environment. There is potential to continue with us for future sessions.

Schedule and Hours

  • Session: Winter 2027 (January and February), with the potential to be kept on for future sessions

  • Shift times: Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday evenings, 6:15 to 9:30 pm

  • Hours: Part-time to start, 3 to 10 hours per week depending on how many evening classes you take on

  • Additional hours: There may be opportunities for extra hours to cover staff absences or as we expand our programming

  • Session length: Classes run in 6-week sessions

Please note: We also have an additional posting for a part-time Studio Technician. Wheel instructor applicants with the necessary technical experience (kiln loading/unloading, reclaiming clay, mixing glazes, kiln maintenance) may be considered for the Studio Technician position as well.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging beginner wheel-throwing instruction for the 6-week session

  • Demonstrate techniques and give clear, encouraging individual feedback

  • Build students’ confidence and skills step by step, including those who have never touched clay

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized studio during and after class

  • Communicate with management about class needs, supplies, and student concerns

Requirements

  • Strong skills in wheel throwing, trimming, and glazing, and the ability to break them down for first-time students. Prior teaching experience an asset.

  • Availability for evening classes, Tuesday to Thursday, 6:30 to 9:00 pm

  • A full 6-week commitment for the session, so students have a consistent instructor from start to finish

  • Flexibility with winter scheduling: if inclement weather forces us to postpone a class, an extra week is added to the end of the session, and we need instructors who can be accommodating

  • Patience, good communication, and a genuine love of clay

Nice to Have

  • Bilingualism (English and French)

  • Prior wheel teaching experience

What We Offer

  • A friendly, creative studio community

  • The opportunity to continue teaching with us in future sessions

  • Flexible starting hours, with room to grow as programming expands

  • Competitive rate of pay based on experience level

  • Studio access outside of class time

Rate

$23-$40/hour (depending on experience)
